Ohrid and Skopje are two significant cities in North Macedonia. Ohrid is known for its rich history and cultural heritage. The city is home to the historic Ohrid Lake, which is one of the oldest and deepest lakes in Europe. The town and the lake are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Ohrid is often referred to as the “Jerusalem of the Balkans” due to its numerous churches, some of which date back to the 13th century. Skopje is the capital city of N. Macedoni. It is political, economic, and cultural center and has a long history that includes influences from various civilizations, including Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Yugoslav periods.
Both Ohrid and Skopje offer unique experiences, combining historical and cultural richness with natural beauty, making them important destinations for tourists visiting North Macedonia.

Itinerary

We depart from Tirana at 8:00am and drive to the border with North Macedonia. The first stop is the city of Ohrid UNESCO and we start our walking tour visiting the main sights of Ohrid.  

Saint Sophia 

The portraits of the six Roman popes are painted inside the church, which reflects the relations between the Eastern and the Western church before the schism in 1054. The bare-foot Christ as well as the cycle of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, are some of the rarities that make the gallery of “St. Sophia” unique gallery of paintings. Its magnificent architecture is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Byzantine architecture in general.

St John the Baptist Kaneo Church

Situated on the cliff over Kaneo Beach overlooking Lake Ohrid in the city of Ohrid, North Macedonia. The church is dedicated to John of Patmos, the writer of Revelation, who has been by some considered to be the same person as John the Apostle.

City Tour and Old Bazaar Area

Visit the City center and the Old Bazaar area where we will see the typical houses of Ohrid. Most of the city is paved in Stone, a reason why it was first called Lyhnidas coming from the Latin Language (a precious stone that emits light.

After all the visits you will have some time to have lunch and enjoy local and traditional food. 

Afternoon we drive toward Skopje. In the evening you have some free time to visit modern center.

 

 Overnight in Skopje.

We start our walking tour of Skopje in the morning to see the main sites, the fortress, the mosques, the old bazaar, the hammam, the central square part of the project Skopje 2014. We will see hundreds of statues and we visit the Memorial house of Saint Mother Teresa. 

The Mother Teresa Memorial House is dedicated to the Catholic saint and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mother Teresa. It is located in her hometown Skopje, in North Macedonia, where she lived from 1910 to 1928.

Daut Pasha Hamam (Pass By) 

Daut Pasha Hamam is a national art museum of North Macedonia in the Old Bazaar, located in the capital city of Skopje. Its permanent collection is housed in the 15th century Turkish Bath building known as the Daut Pasha Baths

Old Bazaar, Skopje 

The Old Bazaar is a bazaar located in Skopje, Macedonia, situated on the eastern bank of the Vardar River, stretching from the Stone Bridge to the Bit-Pazar and from the Skopje Fortress to the Serava river.

Macedonia Square (Pass By) 

Macedonia Square is the main square of Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. The square is the biggest in North Macedonia with total 18.500 m². It is located in the central part of the city, and it crosses the Vardar River.

After our visits we drive to Prishtina, Kosovo where we have a nice walk in the main promenade, visit the statue of Skanderbeg the Albanians' national hero, the statue of Ibrahim Rugova the first prime minister of Kosovo and many more landmarks. 

Newborn Monument: Start your tour at the Newborn Monument, a symbol of the birth of the Republic of Kosovo. The monument is often repainted with different murals and messages, reflecting the current events and sentiments of the city.

Mother Teresa Square: This central square is dedicated to Mother Teresa, and you can find a statue of her in the middle. It's a lively area surrounded by cafes, shops, and government buildings.

Skanderbeg Square: Named after the national hero of Albania, this square is a hub of activity. The Kosovo Government building, the National Library, and the National Museum are located here. The clock tower and the statue of Skanderbeg are also noteworthy.

The National Library of Kosovo: A unique and controversial building designed by Croatian architect Andrija Mutnjaković. It's known for its modern and unconventional design.

Mother Teresa Cathedral: Visit the largest Catholic cathedral in Kosovo, dedicated to Mother Teresa. The architecture is impressive, and it's a peaceful place for reflection.

Church of Christ the Saviour (Pass By)

The church is located on the site of the campus of the University of Pristina.The construction of the church began in 1992 and its symbolism was part of the policies of Serbian nationalism in Serbia, but it is still unfinished.

Then we drive to Prizren to visit the old town. Prizren is the most touristic and most beautiful town in Kosovo, with its Sinan Pasha Mosque, catholic cathedral, the Slavic orthodox church, the old bazaar. The most important place in the town for the history of the Albanians is the house of the League, where they got together to coordinate their war for freedom in 19th century. 

Sinan Pasha Mosque: This Ottoman-era Mosque is an iconic symbol of Prizren. It is one of the most significant Ottoman architectural monuments in the city.

Stone Bridge (Ura e Gurit): Admire the old stone bridge that spans the Prizren Bistrica River. It's a popular spot for taking photos and enjoying the scenic views.

League of Prizren Complex: Learn about the League of Prizren, an important historical event in the city's past. The complex includes the League of Prizren Museum.

Old Bazaar (Çarshia e Vjetër): Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets of the old bazaar, where you can find traditional shops, cafes, and local crafts.

Prizren Fortress (Kalaja): Explore the medieval fortress that overlooks the city. The fortress offers panoramic views of Prizren and the surrounding mountains. (Optional)

 

After all the visit we drive back to Tirana.
